Did you know? The kiwi is a unique and curious bird: it cannot fly, has loose, hair-like feathers, strong legs and no tail. The kiwi is the national icon of New Zealand and unofficial national emblem.
Kiwi are the smallest members of a group of birds called ratites – a group which includes emu, rhea, ostrich and the extinct moa. Apteryx, the scientific genus name for kiwi means wingless – although they do still have tiny wings.
Kiwi can live for between 25 and 50 years. Chicks hatch fully feathered. They emerge from the nest to feed at about five days old and are never fed by their parents. Juveniles grow slowly, taking three to five years to reach adult size.
